Notes from Pastor Matt

Dear Faith Family,

While I was in St. Louis, I happened to catch an interesting program on NPR about ghostwriting. Apparently, there is an entire market in the literary world for celebrities or politicians who want to write a book—without having to actually write one! Cue the anonymous and able author, whose style (if not politics) are then matched with the famous person. The ghostwriter takes the information and presents it in such a way that the celebrity gets all the credit and fame, while the ghostwriter lands a paycheck for his/her quiet “influence”. Amazing. It’s just like what Diane does on a weekly basis with my sermons. Just kidding!

Having just completed a two-week intensive class on the Gospel of Mark, I really appreciate our approach to Scripture. We take God at His Word and don’t fiddle with the divinely inspired text. We don’t doubt authorship or validity and we take every effort to meticulously study the earliest Hebrew and Greek texts that exist. And if St. Mark were to ever write an autobiography, the title should be, “Mark: My Words”. But he didn’t write an autobiography. He wrote a gospel—and his words are awesome! I am pumped up about Mark and I learned so much over the last two weeks that I want to share with you.

That’s why I’m writing (really, it’s me!) a 40-day devotional for the season of Lent based on Mark. This serves two purposes: my class requirements for DMin, but more importantly, it’s a practical application as we begin Lent with a worship service at 7 pm on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22nd. (You’ll have the option of receiving ashes if you desire.)

As you may have noticed, there will be no other midweek suppers and services in Lent this year. Why not? Several reasons: low attendance and participation in the past, especially during the meal portion of the evening; but also a lack of a missional component. At the same time, midweek services in Lent are a human tradition—nothing mandated about them. Still, there is a place for reflection and contemplation of life under the cross—that is what Lent offers. My question is how can we make the same move, while furthering the mission at the same time?

My hope is that families/couples/individuals will use these devotionals together in their home. Reading between the lines, the purpose is not to replace one thing for another, or somehow do less, the purpose is to intentionally grow in our relationship with God—and with one another. In other words, this is an outgrowth of our expressed mission: “Raising Up Families and Followers of Jesus Christ”.

40 days. Lent. The Gospel of Mark. He wrote it. Let’s read all about it.

In Christ,

Pastor Matt Henry

WORSHIP SCHEDULE
We will celebrate Ash Wednesday on February 22 at 7:00 pm. There will be no mid-week Lent suppers or services. Family devotions on the Gospel of Mark and a 40 day Bible reading schedule are in the works.

ESSENTIALS
The next Essentials class is Sundays, March 11 and 25, 1-5 pm. This is the class for those interested in learning more about the Lutheran faith and a great way to get to know people. Lunch is provided. Please contact Pastor at faithpastor@comcast.net if you would like to take part.

LOVE AND WAR BIBLE STUDY
A wife bringing a book to her husband on “Marriage Improvement” is much like a husband bringing his wife a “Diet and Exercise” book. “LOVE AND WAR” is NOT a book on how a husband or wife should change. This fascinating study on marriage is about how Satan and the world are targeting couples, using our own weaknesses to turn us against each other. Marriage should be easy, but it’s incredibly difficult. Find out why. Join us for this enlightening and extremely rewarding journey during the Education hour in the Cypress room (10-11 am).
God has a plan for your marriage, so does Satan. What is your plan? For more information, contact either Greg or Suzanne Balvanz, balvanzfamily@gmail.com

STUDY ON ISLAM
David Hinz is leading an 8 week study on Islam in the Cedar room at 10:00 am. This study will offer you information from an Islamic perspective as well as a view of this growing phenomena from a Christian perspective. A history of Islam’s expansion and decline will be presented, as well as reasons for present resurgence. We will also learn about the life of Mohammad, the Pillars of Islam and Jihad. We will examine the criticism of “Islamophobia” and the fascinating testimonies of two Muslim brothers who converted to Christianity. They offer insights to sharing the Christian faith with Muslim acquaintances. Handouts, bibliography, timelines, etc. will be provided.

LWML CONVENTION NEEDS
The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League WA/AK District (LWML) is holding its district convention in Olympia at the Red Lion Hotel June 22 to June 24. About 300 members and pastors from across the district will convene, conduct business and choose mission grants. Work on the convention has begun. The decorating committee is seeking donations. Please see this month’s newsletter for details.

VOTER’S MEETING
Our church constitution directs us to hold a congregational voters' meeting in January or February of each year. That meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 7, at 7 p.m. and is not expected to last more than one hour. All congregation members are encouraged to attend. On the agenda: a report from Pastor, a financial report summarizing 2011, a bond update, and a chance for you to ask questions. The Church Council will also be recommending that you elect David Hinz to fill our vacancy on the Board of Elders. (Council has already appointed him to fill the vacancy until the voters can decide on the 7th.) Please join us for this meeting!

COMMUNITY DINNER & A MOVIE!
Everyone is invited to the second monthly Community Dinner on Sun. February 12 from 4:30 - 7:30 pm. Dinner will be served from 4:30 - 6 pm. The Fellowship Committee will be showing the movie "Courageous" (rated PG-13) in the Sanctuary from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. Childcare and Kids Activities will be provided for younger children. Please bring a dessert to share! Contact Tammy Tebrugge: tamkam@sbcglobal.net, 360-357-4504 (home)/501-993-4475 (cell) or Suzanne Balvanz at balvanzfamily@gmail.com, 703-434-1178.

SCHOOL ENROLLMENT AND OPEN HOUSE
Enrollment for the 2012-13 school year begins on February 9 at 7:30 am! On this day, there will be an open house that lasts until 4 pm. Tuition and childcare rates are among the information included in the registration packets which will come home on February 2. Open registration (for new students) begins February 23. If you refer a new full-time student who enrolls in K-6th grade, you will receive a $200 tuition credit! What a great incentive to spread the news about our school!

ENSEMBLE
The ensemble is looking for more voices and instruments. We practice on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 - 8:30 pm. Come and join us.

SCRIP
For your day-to-day shopping, use scrip! And remember, if you so choose, 50% of the profit you create can be designated to lower the tuition of any Faith school student! It's a win-win! Look for scrip on sale today in the fellowship hall between the services. For more information, contact Christa Castanon.

FAMILY FUN NITE
Everyone is invited to Faith Lutheran School’s Family Fun Nite on February 4 – 5:00 to 7:30 pm. There will be BINGO, great prizes, food, and bring your own mug root beer floats! Admission is $7.00 per person (children two years and under are free). Admission buys you all-you-can-eat food and all-you-can-play bingo which starts at 5:30. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We are in need of volunteers who would like to head up certain events at Faith--among them, the Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 7, and Kid's Camp (VBS)--dates are not yet set. If you're interested, please speak with Pastor. Thanks!

FELLOWSHIP BAKERS
Every Sunday, we all enjoy the baked goods during the Fellowship Hour. There's something about getting to know each other over a yummy treat that makes it better.  I’d like to invite EVERYONE to join in bringing baked goods to share.  Usually, it's the same ladies who contribute and we'd like some help :)  It doesn't have to be every Sunday, nor does it have to be something super fancy. Maybe it's your favorite cookies, or that cake that you're known for....we'd love to share it.  If you bring something, label your platter so we can thank you!  For more information, please contact Suzanne Balvanz at balvanzfamily@gmail.com or 703-434-1178. Please let me know when you'll be bringing some goodies!

PROCUREMENT LETTERS AVAILABLE

Faith’s Church and School Auction is set for Saturday, May 19, 2012. Procurement letters are now available on the Info Center and ready to be shared with businesses and people you think might be willing to donate goods or services.  Folks tend to give to a good cause—but only when they are asked! Thanks for your help!

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION
You may think that Box Tops for Education don't add up to much since each one is "only" worth a dime. But it adds up. Since 2002, Faith has earned $4,500! Our goal for this year alone is $1,125. Brother, can you spare a box top? It's as good as a dime!
